Information on Autism
Autism, a neurological variation that affects 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 males; 1 in 189 females) (CDC, 2012), is classified as a developmental disability. Defining characteristics of Autism generally appear in children before the age of 3. People with autism may have repetitive behaviors and difficulty with social interaction and verbal/nonverbal communication. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends autism-specific screening during 18-month and 24-month routine visits (Pediatrics, 2007).
